A fake one-star review on Google does more than sting: it lowers your average rating and makes some customers choose someone else without ever calling you. For restaurants, holiday rentals, clinics and shops in Spain, where many customers are tourists who decide on Google Maps alone, the impact is immediate. The good news is that Google removes reviews that break its rules. The bad news is that most reports are made badly and rejected.
First: does it really break the rules?
Google does not remove a review for being negative or unfair. It removes it if it breaks its content policy. The reasons that work best are:
- False content: the person was never a customer or describes something that did not happen.
- Conflict of interest: it was written by a competitor, a former employee or someone with an interest in harming you.
- Offensive content: insults, threats, discriminatory language.
- Personal information: full names, phone numbers or health details of third parties.
- Off-topic content: political opinions, complaints about another business or text that does not describe the experience.
If the review comes from a real customer politely describing a bad experience, Google is very unlikely to remove it. In that case, a good reply is the best option.
How to report it
- Go to your Google Business Profile (from Search or Google Maps, signed in with the account that manages the listing).
- Go to "Reviews", find the one you want to report and tap the three dots.
- Choose "Report review" and select the reason. This step matters most: if you choose "spam" for a review that is really a conflict of interest, it will usually be rejected.
- Note the date. After a few days you can check its status in Google's review management tool.
If Google rejects it
From the review management tool you can request a new review. At this point the reason alone is not enough: you need to give context. Explain why it breaks the rules and back it up specifically: that the person does not appear in your bookings or invoices, that the review was posted on the same day as five others from new accounts, or that the author works for a competitor.
Common mistake
Asking friends to report the review "en masse" does not work. Google does not decide by the number of reports, and it may see the pattern as manipulation.
How to reply in the meantime
Always reply, even if you are sure it is fake. Calmly, without accusing and without giving personal details: "We cannot find any visit under your name in our records. If you have been with us, we would be glad to hear from you so we can understand what happened". Reply in the language the review was written in. People who read the review later see a calm business that cares.
When to get help
If the review is hurting your business, if it has already been rejected or if several have appeared at once, we can help. We analyse each review for free and tell you which ones have a realistic chance before we start (more information). And if you want to check first whether your review stands a chance, use the review checker (in Spanish).
